Make your home greener
- Insulate your home to reduce energy use and costs.
- Install water saving facilities.
- Cut down on use of chemical air fresheners and other pollutants which can aggravate allergies and contribute to sick building syndrome.
- Open those curtains as wide as possible to use natural light. You'll reduce energy costs and feel better for it.
- Don't leave electrical equipment on standby. It uses just as much electricity as when it's on.
- Put fat and oils in the bin not down the sink. They clog up your drains and can cause flooding.
- Compost your food waste instead of using chemical plant foods.
- And, last but not least, recycle bottles, plastics, cans and paper.
Make your home safer
- Leave a small energy saving light on while you're away on holiday to deter thieves.
- Remember to cancel newspapers and other deliveries.
- Most importantly, ask a trusted neighbour to come round regularly to check that everything's OK.
- Install smoke alarms properly and have them checked regularly.
- Install burglar alarms and make sure they're in good working order too.
- And, again, the obvious one: make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked properly every time you leave the house.
In the event of a flood
Britain's being hit by flooding more than ever these days so it's important to know what to do if disaster strikes:
- Turn off gas and electricity.
- Inform the emergency services.
- Tell your insurance company as soon as you can.
- Once the flood has subsided, open all doors and windows to give the house a good airing.
- Run taps for a few minutes before use.
- Don't try to dry out photos or papers. Put them in a plastic bag and store them in the fridge.
- Throw away all food that's come into contact with contaminated flood water.
